Description
The Steinway Model A-III, commonly referred to as the “Stretch A,” is widely regarded as one of the most successful scale designs Steinway & Sons ever produced. Manufactured in New York between 1913 and 1945, the A-III had a relatively short production run and remains highly sought after by pianists, technicians, and collectors.
Built in 1916, this instrument comes from what many technicians consider Steinway’s Golden Era of New York production, a period known for producing some of the company’s most musically satisfying instruments.
At 6’4″, the A-III is slightly longer than the traditional Model A and was designed to bridge the gap between the Model A and the larger Model B. The additional scale length allows for longer bass strings and a larger soundboard, producing exceptional tonal depth, power, and projection while maintaining a versatile size suitable for homes, studios, and teaching environments.
The piano features a Steinway / Renner action fitted with genuine Steinway hammers, providing the responsive touch, control, and tonal character Steinway grand pianos are known for.
Cabinet & Finish
This piano is finished in beautiful flame/ribbon mahogany, highlighting the wood’s natural figure and character. Compared to the more common ebony finish, mahogany Steinway cabinets are often sought after for their warm appearance and traditional craftsmanship, making the instrument both a musical centerpiece and an elegant piece of fine furniture.
