Description
Description
The Steinway Model A-III, often referred to as the “Stretch A,” is one of the most desirable and collectible Steinway grand piano designs ever produced.
Manufactured exclusively in New York from 1913 through 1945, this model had a relatively short production run and remains one of Steinway’s most respected scale designs.
Measuring 6’4″, the A-III is several inches longer than the standard Model A and was originally designed to compete with the slightly larger Steinway Model B.
Because of its extended scale, the piano produces a tone many pianists describe as the sound of a 7-foot piano within a more manageable 6-foot size.
One of the defining characteristics of the Model A-III is its exceptional tonal balance across all registers.
While some pianos may exhibit stronger areas within the scale, the A-III is widely known for its smooth, even tonal transition from bass to treble, creating a cohesive and powerful musical voice.
The additional length of the piano allows for longer bass strings, resulting in a deep, rich bass tone,
while the mid and treble sections deliver the singing, bell-like clarity that defines the Golden Era of Steinway craftsmanship.
This instrument underwent a complete restoration in 2022, including a new Canadian Sitka spruce soundboard, new pinblock, new strings, and a fully rebuilt action with premium German components.
The result is a piano that combines the legendary musical character of early Steinway craftsmanship with the performance reliability of a newly rebuilt instrument.
For pianists seeking a Steinway that offers nearly the power and depth of a Model B while maintaining a slightly more compact size,
the Model A-III “Stretch A” is widely considered one of the finest designs Steinway ever produced.
A rare and exceptional instrument, both musically and historically.
